Project Background
As downtown continued its reemergence as a dynamic environment to live, work, and play, we began exploring a vibrant community gathering space. In 2021, the City purchased the property at the corner of 21st Street and Magnolia Avenue thanks to a generous grant from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. From there, we began work with the community to plan and develop this downtown community gathering space.
- 2022- Conceptual Designs Complete
- Completed Phase 1 of Construction (grading, concrete, & utility work)
- Spring 2024 - Partnered with Timber Framers & VMI to build the market pavilion
- Fall 2024 - Partnered again with the Timber Framers to build the cover for the stage.
- Early 2025 - Conducted naming contest and officially named the space "Magnolia Square"
- Summer 2025 - Completed Vibrant Mural
- Fundraising & Completing Finishing Touches

Thanks to the dedication of our community, Magnolia Square is nearly complete. The hard work, planning and support from residents and partners have transformed the space into something we can all be proud of.
