Animal Control
Animal Control Unit
The Buena Vista Police Department Animal Control Unit is committed to protecting both the community and its animals through enforcement, education, and responsible care. Our officers work to ensure safety while promoting humane treatment and responsible pet ownership throughout the city.
Calls for Service
Officers enforce City ordinances and applicable Virginia laws regarding animal care and ownership. They also educate the public, issue summonses for violations, secure warrants when necessary, and may impound or seize animals when required to protect public safety or animal welfare.

Wildlife Encounters
For issues involving nuisance wildlife – such as skunks, ground hogs, snakes, racoons, or other wild animals on your property, residents should contact the DWR (Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources).
The DWR can provide guidance on handling wildlife situations and maintains a list of licensed trappers who can assist with specific concerns.
