BVPD K-9 Teams Train with Regional Partners Ahead of Certification

Buena Vista, VA, October 9, 2026: The Buena Vista Police Department currently has two K-9 teams working diligently to prepare for their initial certifications later this month. During the first half of this week, both teams, Officer Camden with K9 Beau and Officer Wheeler with K9 Hans, trained alongside K-9 units from the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office and the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office.

On October 7, BVPD’s K-9 handlers and the teams from Augusta County used portions of Glen Maury Park for exercises and practical training scenarios related to tracking a missing person. These were training scenarios only, and there was no actual search or public safety concern.

Beau and Hans are single-purpose narcotics detection dogs who are also trained to assist with tracking and article searches when the need arises. This week’s training allowed both teams to keep developing those skills in realistic environments, alongside experienced regional partners.

Chief David Clements said, “We are extremely appreciative of the support and cooperation we receive from neighboring agencies. Opportunities to train together strengthen relationships, promote consistency in our practices, and help all of our agencies build the best possible K-9 programs for the communities we serve. The willingness of our regional partners to share their time, knowledge, and experience is invaluable as our teams continue progressing toward certification.”

The Buena Vista Police Department thanks the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office and the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office for their time, expertise, and continued partnership.
