Buena Vista Police Warn Residents About “Brushing” Scam Packages

Buena Vista, Va. — The Buena Vista Police Department is warning residents about “brushing” scams after a resident turned an unexpected package in to Investigator Slagle, who recognized the scheme.

In a brushing scam, a seller ships a low-cost item the recipient never ordered, then uses the recipient’s name and address to post a fake “verified purchase” review.

Some packages now include a note with a QR code. The note claims the recipient must scan it to find out who sent a gift or process a return. Do not scan it. These codes can lead to fake websites designed to steal card numbers and login information.

If you receive a package you didn’t order:

  • Don’t scan the QR code or enter personal information.
  • Don’t turn on or connect any device that comes in the package.
  • Watch your online shopping accounts for unusual activity.
  • Call the Buena Vista Police Department at 540-261-6171 with questions or to report a suspicious package.

Buena Vista is a certified crime prevention community, and the department works to stay current on scams that could affect residents. The department thanks the Citizen who did the right thing. Please share this information with a neighbor.
